What is Nordic Design?
Did you know that Nordic or Scandinavian design is a design movement characterized by simplicity and functionality that began in the early 20th century? The design was then spread widely in the 1950s throughout the five Nordic countries namely, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Iceland. [1] Generally, the style is characterized by furniture and objects with clean lines, a look without artifice or frills, the use of natural materials such as wood, light colors as well as open and bright rooms. [2]
Nordic design also places much emphasis on minimalism and practicability without forsaking beauty. Ample space is complimented by the minimal placement of items, and the touch of nature completes the overall aesthetic. As reflected in the lifestyle of the Scandinavians themselves, whom greatly value nature and time outdoors, the wooden floors are mainly left untouched and lighter natural wooden tones are commonly used in their homes. In addition, live plants representing the nature element of the Scandinavian design further emphasizes the natural and homely ambience. [3]
During the harsh cold winter, the Scandinavians instill elements of warm and inviting textures to formulate the vibe of a cozy home. This results in the usage of neutral colors such as bright white with hints of black and tan accentuated by soft hues, which is what makes the Nordic design so unique. Ideally, Nordic design caters for those who seek for minimalism in their living space without sacrificing any aesthetic elements.
As outgoing Chief Design Officer of Apple Sir Jonathan Paul Ive once said, “There is beauty when something works and it works intuitively.” [4] According to MYMOVE (previously known as Freshome), a successful online magazine focusing on interior design and architecture with an impressive 3.8+ million unique monthly visitors, “Since the style was founded on integrating form and function, focusing on comfort and embracing “less is more,” it’s easy to see why so many people are obsessed with Nordic design.” [5]
