What is Home and Family?
According to the Cambridge Dictionary, a home is defined as a house where you live, especially with your family. [1] However, while memories and people perish overtime, homes do not and thus they become a memory machine that brings meaning and joy to our lives. Perhaps this is why after a long day at work, or after an enjoyable vacation overseas, we still return home despite how long the journey may be. There is certainly nothing like being at home. For many children, home is where they grow up in and can induce memorable memories and feelings even decades after they’ve moved away.
Professor Dr. Graham Rowles, Director of the Graduate Center for Gerontology and Chair of the Department of Gerontology at the University of Kentucky explains that, ” We have a need for a place that is called home. Home provides security, control, belonging, identity, and privacy, among other things. But most of all, it’s a place that provides us with a centering—a place from which we leave each morning and to which we return each evening.” [2]
It is a known fact that most families stay together in a home and generally, the traditional definition of “family” comprises of a man and a woman who were married, and their children. In the 1950s, the ideal family was a father, a mother, and two offspring. The current definition is now modernized and inclusive as a family may consist of two parents of any gender. In other words, a family is a group of people who share a very personal level of relationship. However, there are many different ways that you can define these relationships and families are generally divided into these following categories.
Firstly, the consanguinity relationship means related by birth. Typically, siblings have a consanguinity relationship with their parents. Although your parents are not biologically related to each other, they’re still considered family and that is a relationship by affinity, or marriage. Last but not least, there is the relationship by co-residence, which means living together. This last relationship illustrates one of the notable aspects of family; in almost all societies, families are defined by living together, sharing a same space, for example, a home. [3]
On that note, according to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs by American psychologist Abram Maslow, love and belonging is essential to humans. Since families live and spend a lot time together at home, this allows them forge a bond that gives them a sense of belonging to one another. Essentially, home and family are deeply connected in many different aspects and more often than not, home is a family’s safe sanctuary for them to grow together. [4] Home is also where parents spend most of their lives raising, educating and nurturing their children. Ultimately, home is the setting where families invest all of their time, hopes and dreams for the present and the future. [5]
